Brigid Ashwood

Brigid Ashwood is a contemporary artist exploring classic themes. With influences and techniques well rooted in old traditions she seeks to reinterpret mythic and fairytale worlds for a modern audience. Brigid is comfortable in traditional mediums such as egg tempera and silverpoint.  Brigid also works in the luminous tones of the digital palette. Brigid's work is collected internationally and has been featured in exhibits around the country as well in three books and several international magazines.

"Obviously, I am greatly influenced by the Steampunk and Clockpunk esthetics. But beyond that I am inspired by the myriad of engineers in my family (my Granddad was Nautical Engineer Peter Payne - you might have seen some of his boats in the Bond films!) - fairy legends and Celtic mythology also inspire me. Some of my favorite artists are Hans Holbein the Younger, Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Leonardo, Gil Elvgren, Travis Charest.."

Her images have been licensed for a wide variety of products sold worldwide. She resides in Maryland in a 246 year old house with her husband & daughter, and four aggravating yet lovable pets. She regularly attends festivals and cons.

Brigid's constant theme throughout her work is her love affair with the human (or humanoid if you will) face and form - it's emotion - it's beauty - and what information a subtle play of expression can offer about the history and personality of the subject.

While her art always seems to tell a story - it's not a tale she is always privy too.  Beings and imagery play in her mind and whisper their demands to her as she paints.  This results in mysterious images rich with untold secrets. She believes the stories her pieces tell exist in the minds of the viewer - which cannot be known with out your imagination. The collaboration between artist and audience is what she most cherishes.
