Olivier Ledroit
Butterfly
Fairy Figurines
We
are pleased to introduce Olivier Ledroit, a fantasy artist from France.
Olivier began his career as an illustrator of several
roll playing magazines and novels in France. He
gradually built a following for his butterfly inspired fairy ink and
water color sketches.
Now Oliver has designed a limited edition of 2,400 fairy figurines,
made of hard cast resin with translucent wings.
Olivier's imaginary world is inhabited by fairies that resemble
butterflies and are endowed with distinctive personalities.
The fairies are often transparent and fragile and may be beautiful
or grotesque, sensual or cruel. Some live by day, others by
night, but they always keep away from humans.
"For me, the faerie world
is the expression of a nostalgic feeling. Faeries evoke a
private world inhabited by emotions and sensations that invariably
take me back to my childhood. When I was twelve, I collected
butterflies and insects. It was an all-consuming passion that
allowed me to escape the bleak suburban housing project where I
lived.
So, summer and winter, I spent all of my free time in the
neighbouring fields and woods with my net and cyanide jar.
Golden Scarabs, Cicindela, Swallowtails, Giant Peacock Moths,
Death's Head Hawk Moths - all these names fascinated me.
From those days I have kept a strong preference for the strange and
delicate beauty of insects and of nature in general.
Drawing came later and it was nourished by this youthful passion.
An illustration or a sketch is often triggered by the memory of a
misty morning - or by recalling the complicated veins of a
butterfly's wing or the shapely curve of a Scarab's leg.
Finding ideas on these themes is simple: I just have to walk
around in the charmed places where elves are supposed to live.
It is a pleasure and a privilige that never ceases to amaze me.
